There is a chill in the air, and the leaves are starting to turn, which can only mean one thing – fall is here! Let the cool air bring you inside to the Elmwood Hall Danbury Senior Center! Our programs are heating up!

We are partnering with several community organizations over the next few months for some exciting and valuable educational programs. First up, we are working with the RVNA and the YMCA of Western Connecticut to sponsor a ‘Know Your Numbers’ screening on October 17th. You may have heard that you need to “know your numbers,” which refers to key markers of heart health like blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference. Although doctors test most of these numbers at annual check-ups, it’s important that you know your numbers and understand what they mean. By keeping those numbers within a healthy range, you can greatly improve your heart health and reduce your risk for heart disease. During this event, the RVNA will conduct a simple blood test to determine an individual’s A1c, blood pressure, and body weight. The tests should only take about 10 minutes. This is a FREE event. Space is limited to 16 participants. Appointment required. Walk-ins will not be guaranteed.

On Wednesday, October 22nd, Dr. Daniel Howard from Somers Orthopaedic will be joining us for a presentation on Arthritis and joint replacement. Daniel Howard, MD, FAAOS, is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon with subspecialty fellowship training in sports medicine. He provides individualized, compassionate care to patients at Somers Orthopaedic Surgery & Sports Medicine Group in Mount Kisco, Fishkill, and Carmel, New York, and Danbury, Connecticut. He will provide you with valuable information on how to take care of yourself now and in the long run. Please note that he will not be providing medical advice, but rather educational information.

Our wildly popular Memories to Memoir class returns with writer Beth Young on Mondays at 1 pm starting October 20th. No experience necessary. Let Beth help guide you in putting your stories down on paper. It's a wonderful keepsake for future generations. This class fills up quickly, so don't miss out!

A reminder that we have daily exercise classes. One of those classes is our popular Broadway Burn class taught by instructor Matthew Ames. This class is geared toward seniors and includes chair work to achieve the same muscle activation without the need to stabilize as much, creating an even lower-impact class. It is dance meets exercise! The class incorporates Broadway jazz and musical theater patterns in an easy-to-follow workout set to your favorite show tunes from television, movies, and, of course, Broadway. It’s like Zumba, but with showtunes! Join us for some fun!
