Deadlines for Connecticut Residents with Expiring Credentials Extended Due to COVID-19
The Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles, with the approval of Governor Ned Lamont, has extended deadlines for Connecticut residents with expiring credentials. The extensions are intended to help safeguard the general public against the spread of coronavirus/COVID-19 and to maintain social distance within offices.
The Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles, with the approval of Governor Ned Lamont, has extended deadlines for Connecticut residents with expiring credentials. The extensions are intended to help safeguard the general public against the spread of coronavirus/COVID-19 and to maintain social distance within offices.
Deadlines have been extended for the following items:
- Driver's licenses (does not apply to CDL - see below)
- Learner's permits (does not apply to Commercial Learner’s Permits - see below)
- Identity cards
- Permanent Disability Placards
* If the item expired from March 1, 2020 to December 31, 2020, it remains valid for one (1) year after the expiration date printed on the credential.
* If the item expired or will expire from January 1, 2021 to March 31, 2021, it remains valid through December 31, 2021.
Deadlines have also been extended for the following item:
- Commercial Driver's Licenses (CDL)
* If the item expired from March 1, 2020 to December 31, 2020, it remains valid for one (1) year after the expiration date printed on the credential.
- Commercial Learner's Permits (CLP)
* If the item expired from March 1, 2020 to December 31, 2020, it remains valid until February 28, 2021.
- Motor vehicle and boat registrations
- Emissions tests or retests
* If the item expired from March 10, 2020 to May 31, 2020, it remained valid until November 30, 2020.
* If the item expired from June 1, 2020 to November 30, 2020, it remained valid until December 31, 2020.
Additional Extensions:
New Residents - For any person who moved to Connecticut after March 10, 2020, the deadline for obtaining a license, registration or emissions inspection in Connecticut was extended by 180 days.
Suspension Related Matters - Suspensions that took effect between March 10, 2020 and June 30, 2020 were delayed by 180 days as a result of failure to attend an Operator Retraining or Child Safety Seat Program, or nonpayment of fees due to a returned check or rejected payment.
According to a Connecticut DMV Notice and Order signed by its Commissioner, Sibongile Magubane, “All late fees that normally would be associated with a late renewal will be waived during the time period of the extension for qualifying credentials.”
The notice also states that “law enforcement personnel [was] notified of this order.”
