AGORA, a Newtown resident-founded nonprofit, has completed its inaugural pilot program—a dynamic, in-person leadership development experience for teens across Fairfield and Litchfield Counties—and is now seeking to grow its impact.

Created and run by Newtown residents, AGORA offers a free 70+ hour leadership training program that equips high school students with the tools, confidence, and ethical grounding to lead with purpose. The July 2025 pilot cohort included students from across Fairfield and Litchfield counties, who came together for immersive workshops, public speaking training, service learning, and values-based leadership development.

“Our goal is to equip young minds with big ideas, a deep sense of responsibility, and understanding of why servant leadership is the most impactful form of leadership,” said Robert Payne, AGORA's founder and president.

The success of AGORA's pilot program was made possible by the support of several dedicated community partners, according to Bruna Payne, AGORA co-founder and director.

"We couldn't have done it without them," Payne said.

Faith Church hosted the program, offering a welcoming space where students could learn, grow, and connect. The New American Dream Foundation provided participants with an opportunity to volunteer serving meals to seniors living in low-income housing. Housatonic Habitat for Humanity created AGORA's first leadership internship, awarded to Michael O'Hare, a senior at Immaculate High School, who will assist the organization through project-based work.

AGORA also recognized The Silo for providing hands-on learning experiences that emphasized collaboration and service-based leadership.

Amid growing interest from students and families, AGORA is expanding into a year-long after-school program, to be held Fridays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

As the program looks ahead, AGORA is seeking support from community members, local businesses, and philanthropic partners committed to investing in the next generation of leaders.

AGORA takes its name from the ancient Greek word “γορ,” meaning “assembly” or “gathering place," a nod to its mission as a modern hub for learning and leadership. Inspired by Aristotle's academy in Athens, the program aims to empower the next generation of leaders in southwestern Connecticut.
