Here Is to The End Of An Era And New Beginnings
As we mark Tribuna's 500th issue, we also mark the end of an era for the City of Danbury, an era that is a central part of the history of our publication, and for the sake of transparency and full disclosure, the Tribuna family.
As we mark Tribuna's 500th issue, we also mark the end of an era for the City of Danbury, an era that is a central part of the history of our publication, and for the sake of transparency and full disclosure, the Tribuna family.
On December 11, Governor Ned Lamont appointed Mark Boughton to serve as commissioner of the Department of Revenue Services. Boughton, the longest-serving mayor in the city's history, resigned on December 17 to take on this new role with the state.
Tribuna's first issue was published in February of 2000; Mark Boughton's first term as mayor of Danbury began in 2001. And along the journey of 499 editions of Tribuna, we have covered the good and the bad – as community leaders fought alongside as well as on opposing sides of many issues.
Together, we learned to agree to disagree and to separate who we were as human beings from what we did for a living and became lifelong friends, yes, friends.
We refrained from covering Danbury politics, writing editorials, aware that our objectivity was no longer intact once the line from professional to friends was crossed.
We don't regret it. We would argue that it is the only right medicine for the political wounds of our country. To look at one another as human, to try to understand each other's why, to reach a middle ground, a place that can only be found in each other's humanity.
With that said, good luck, dear friend, in your new endeavors. You were not a perfect leader, for you are human. And what is indisputable is that you gave Danbury your all, and when you aimed higher, it was with the hope to do for the state of Connecticut what you had done for Danbury. It's bittersweet but please know that Danbury will always be with you.
In the same breath, we welcome Mayor Joseph Cavo, who, as City Council president for 14 years, was actively behind the scenes of the municipal policymaking process. As mayor, he will now also be the face of the city, and in our 500th issue, Tribuna introduces him to the community in his new role.
Here is to the end of an era and new beginnings to you both! Best wishes.
