Vik Muniz-Extra Ordinary Now Showing at The New Britain Museum of American Art

Vik Muniz, a Brazilian-American artist born in 1961, is recognized as one of the most innovative and creative artists of our time. His approach is endlessly playful and inventive, showcasing a remarkable mastery in what he terms “photographic delusions.”

Muniz works with a wide variety of unconventional materials—including sugar, tomato sauce, diamonds, magazine clippings, chocolate syrup, dust, and junk. He meticulously creates intricate tableaux, which he then captures with his camera. From a distance, the subjects of his photographs are recognizable; however, up close, viewers discover a complex and surprising composition that reveals how the piece was made. This transformative moment, where one thing shifts into another, is of great significance to Muniz.

This major mid-career retrospective examines more than twenty-five years of Muniz’s work, transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary and reminding us of art’s power to surprise, delight, and alter our perceptions of the world.

The exhibition has been co-organized by the Foundation for the Exhibition of Photography in Minneapolis, Paris, and Lausanne, and the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, in association with the New Britain Museum of Art. It will be on display through February 23, 2025.

At the New Britain Museum of American Art (NBMAA), this exhibition is supported by Kenneth L. Boudreau and Judith W. Boudreau, The Saunders Foundation, Jay Bombara and Allison Reilly-Bombara, the Gong-Graham Family, and the O’Neil Family of Baltimore, MD. Additional funding comes from Dr. Timothy P.
