Samaritan Health Center Closing in August

It is with mixed emotions that Samaritan Health Center (SHC) announces its closure after 16 wonderful years of serving the Danbury at-risk community.

Its last day of operation will be August 13, 2024.

SHC is closing its doors because of the positive changes brought about by the new Connecticut State rules regarding Husky insurance. These new regulations now ensure that all children up to 15 years old, regardless of their immigration status, will have access to health insurance. Additionally, the State of Connecticut has a plan to expand the age limit to 19 years old, possibly next year. This significant development means that the primary need for the Samaritan Health Center is being covered through these expanded services.

Since its founding in 2008, Samaritan’s mission has been to provide quality pediatric care to children without insurance, ensuring that every child has access to the healthcare they deserve. Over the years, SHC – a ministry partner of the Jericho Partnership - has been privileged to care for approximately 4,600 children and their families, providing not just medical services, but also guidance, support, compassion, and hope.

“While we are saddened to end this chapter, we are heartened by the progress made in healthcare accessibility,” said Dr. Donald Sampson, SHC’s Clinical Director. “We are confident that this change will greatly benefit our patients and our community, ensuring that no child is left without the medical care they need.”

“We wish to express the deepest gratitude for the support we have received throughout the years, and for what we’ve accomplished together,” said Dr. Patrick Broderick, Chair of Samaritan Health Center’s Board of Directors, and retired Head of Danbury Hospital’s Emergency Department.

Samaritan’s patients have been sent notices of the closure, along with instructions on how to enroll in Husky insurance and a list of local practices that accept Husky. Samaritan's staff will remain available to patients by phone after August 13 to arrangement the disbursement of medical files.
