Summer may be winding down, and a chill begins to fill the air, but programs at the Elmwood Hall Danbury Senior Center continue to educate and entertain daily. In addition to our regular daily programming, which includes exercise classes, art classes, dance, and more, we have some amazing special programming coming over the next month.

On Monday, September 8, is our first Senior Show & Tell! “Show & Tell” was always fun as a kid – it will be fun as an adult too! Bring in something important to you, to show and tell us a story about it! Possibilities include a childhood object, a souvenir from a memorable trip, or just a fun shopping find with a story! Come with an object to tell a story, or just come and listen. Either way, it will be a fascinating afternoon.

This fall, we have partnered with the Western Connecticut Area Agency on Aging (WCAAA) to present programs on Medicare and Medicare enrollment as the open enrollment period for this year approaches. On Tuesday, September 16, the WCAAA will present “Medicare Advantage vs. the Original,” a presentation on the pros and cons of each plan. Topics will include what’s covered under Original Medicare vs. Medicare Advantage, costs, premiums, and out-of-pocket differences, network restrictions and provider access, prescription drug coverage (Part D), extra benefits (like vision, dental, fitness). how to compare plans and enroll, and Q&A with a certified CHOICES counselor.

On Thursday October 2, the WCAAA will return with a presentation on how to prepare for Medicare open enrollment. They will also be back throughout October and November with certified counselors who will be able to assist you with enrollment. Please call for more information.

Speaking of health…the Danbury Health Department will be holding two flu shot clinics here at the Danbury Senior Center. The first will be held on Thursday, September 25, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and the second on Thursday, October 2, from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. These clinics are open and free of charge to all those over 60. No appointment is necessary.

We will also welcome the National Patient Advocacy Foundation (NPAF) on Tuesday, September 23, for a presentation about the resources they provide. NPAF leads nationwide initiatives that connect patients with complimentary, non-clinical support services designed to improve both health outcomes and financial well-being. Come learn more about the assistance available to you.

On a lighter note, do you enjoy theater? Would you like to give it a try? Our Script in Hand play-reading series continues on Wednesday, September 24, at 9 a.m. Join Program Coordinator Matt Austin as he leads this engaging series. Each month, we read a play aloud. You can take on a role or simply sit back and enjoy. September’s reading will feature the stage version of the movie Clue.
