Direct Support Professionals Help Build a More Inclusive State

DSPs provide a wide range of support, depending on an individual’s unique needs and aspirations.
Imagine helping someone land a job, live more independently, or master a skill they never thought possible. That’s the work of a Direct Support Professional.
Across Connecticut, thousands of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities are living more independent and fulfilling lives. Behind so many of these success stories are Direct Support Professionals (DSPs), caring and dedicated workers who help individuals build skills, achieve goals, and live fully in their communities.
DSPs provide a wide range of support, depending on an individual’s unique needs and aspirations. They assist with everyday activities, help individuals learn and master new life skills, support personal care and hygiene, guide them in finding and keeping jobs, and encourage participation in social, recreational, and community activities. Their work helps individuals shape their futures and participate as active, valued members of their communities.
The Connecticut Department of Developmental Services (DDS) recently launched a statewide campaign to raise awareness about these essential roles. Most DSP positions are with our private provider agencies and are rooted in the community – working directly with individuals, not behind a desk.
Being a DSP is more than a job; it is a career in which you can make a difference every single day. It is a chance to help someone take their first steps towards employment, move into their own place, or enjoy the everyday experiences that contribute to a full and meaningful life. It is deeply rewarding work that changes lives, including the lives of the professionals who choose this career path.
If you are looking for meaningful work that allows you to build stronger communities and brighter futures, I encourage you to consider becoming a Direct Support Professional. Visit dspjobs.ct.gov to learn more about available opportunities across Connecticut.
Together, we can continue building a more inclusive, supportive, and vibrant state – one fulfilling career at a time.
