Election Day Registration
The pre-election voter registration cutoff deadline is seven (7) days before Election Day on Tuesday, November 3. Connecticut also has Election Day Registration on Election Day itself for voters who need it.
Election Day Registration permits anyone to register and vote in person on Election Day who meets the eligibility requirements for voting in this state and is not already registered, OR is registered in one town but has moved to another town. By law, a person is eligible to register and vote if he or she is (1) a US citizen, (2) aged 18 or older, (3) a bona fide resident of the town in which he or she applies for admission, and (4) has completed confinement and parole if previously convicted of a disfranchising felony.
Election Day Registration (EDR) is not available at your polling place, but is available at a designated EDR location in each town, beginning at 6 am and ending at 8 pm. You will register and vote at the designated EDR location in your town. Please plan to arrive early in the day as there may be long lines. You must be registered by 8 pm in order to vote. You will need to provide proof of identity and residency.
What Is an Acceptable Form of Identification for Voting?
- Photo Identification is not required. For most voters, your identification must fit one of the following requirements for it to be accepted as a valid form of ID at the polls:
- name and address, orname and signature, or, name and photograph
- However, for voters who are voting for the first time in a municipality, and lacked proper identification when registering, some additional types of identification may be required. Contact your local Registrar of Voters’ office or visit ct.gov, for more information on ID requirements.
Voting Eligibility
Am I eligible to vote?
- Are you at least 17 and turning 18 before Election Day?
- Are you a United States citizen living in Connecticut?
- If you have been convicted of a felony, have you completed confinement and parole?
If you can answer yes to all three of these questions, you are eligible to register to vote in Connecticut.
What if I moved recently?
- You will have to update your voter registration to reflect your new address.
- If you moved to Connecticut from another state, if you moved to a different town within Connecticut, or even if you moved within the same town, your polling location may have changed.
- Your voter registration should always reflect your current home address.
What if I am a student?
If you are a college student living away from home, you may choose to vote in one of two ways:
- Either complete an absentee ballot for the election in your home town
OR - Register to vote in your college town
