Elmwood Senior Center Offers Activities to Warm Up the Winter Season

There is a light at the end of the cold wintery tunnel. The days are getting longer, and the temperatures are starting to rise (well, a little anyway…).

Come thaw out at the Elmwood Hall Danbury Senior Center. All month long, our programs keep those over 60 active and engaged.

We have regular exercise classes every day of the week. Recently, we added an exercise and dance class called Broadway Burn on Thursdays at 1 pm. No experience is necessary. This class, led by Matthew Ames, brings a little fun to exercise, incorporating Broadway dance moves. Come live out your Broadway dream and get a workout at the same time!

February also brings our annual partnership with the AARP Foundation for Tax Assistance services. Starting Tuesday, February 4, AARP Foundation Tax-Aide provides tax assistance to anyone, free of charge, with a focus on taxpayers who are over 50 and have low to moderate income. You don't need to be an AARP member to use the service. You must make an appointment with the senior center. Appointments are available Tuesdays & Thursdays from 9 am-12 pm each day. Appointment fill up fast, so we suggest reaching out as soon as you can for an appointment.

AARP helps to sponsor other programs at our center, including The New American Dream Foundation’s Cultural Celebration Series. On Tuesday, February 11, we will be celebrating Ecuador. The event is from 11 am - 2 pm and it will feature various Ecuadorian food favorites, as well as a performance by local Ecuadorian dancers. This event is free of charge, but space is limited.

We continue our community partnerships with a workshop called ‘How to Write an Obituary’, led by the folks from Dignity Memorial / Green Funeral Home. While this may seem like a morbid subject, it is an important one. How do you sum up a life in a few paragraphs? Kelly Coughlin from Dignity will lead us through a workshop on how to write your own, celebrating the heart and soul of a person, sharing likes and dislikes, hopes and dreams, proudest accomplishments and even regrets.

Something a little more fun is our monthly Dance & Social Party. Join DJ Kevin Burland as he spins some tunes you can dance to or just come to socialize with friends. This month, our dance will be held on Friday, February 21, at 1pm. We always have refreshments, but this month is a special Valentine’s Ice Cream Social theme. Join us for a delicious sundae!

Whatever your interest is, there is always something for everyone at The Elmwood Hall Danbury Senior Center. Remember, the Elmwood Hall Danbury Senior Center, located at 10 Elmwood Place in Danbury, is open Monday-Friday 8:30am-4:30pm. Membership is FREE to all those 60+ (regardless of whether you live in Danbury or not). We would love to see you very soon! For more Information, visit www.danburyseniors.org
